My design objective was to create a three stage boss in a RPG Shooter that would inhabit Poison Mesa.
The final boss of Poison Mesa is the rapidly evolving queen of the Mesa hive. As the player fights the monster, they must destroy her eggs and larva, clip her wings, then finish her off.
Inspired by insects and creatures of arid climates, specifically termites, I set out to create my monster. Initially, each of the three phases of the boss were going represent a stage in the insectoid's life cycle. I deviated from this after deciding that the larval stage was not intimidating enough as a final boss. I moved on to change the battle structure from a growing enemy, to one that would rapidly evolve to adapt to the player. Similar in concept, but much scarier.
