My design objective was to create a three stage boss in a RPG Shooter, and the environment that it would inhabit: Poison Mesa.

I first explored the world through the the idea of the mesa. I though about the kind of creatures that live in arid climates, especially insects. From there I further narrowed the search to nest building insects. I found inspiration in the form of large termite mounds build with catacomb like tunnels that reach high into the air. What would a human sized termite mound look like? Maybe something like a mesa. A poison mesa!

From there, I turned to human desert dwellings. I wanted to explore what the world the people living in the shadow of the mesa would be like.
